Viewing: The established Blackwing Synchro strategy

Lore Archive

"On wings of midnight, the Blackwing flock descends like a living storm. These avian warriors swarm the field with breathtaking speed, each monster summoning the next in a cascade of dark feathers and razor talons. Their Synchro formations are legendary—Armor Master, who cannot be destroyed by battle; Armed Wing, who pierces all defense. Under the command of Crow Hogan's legacy, they prove that the sky belongs to those who dare to fly."

Crow Hogan's Blackwings from Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's are each named after a wind, a sword or a bow, and between them the winds cover the compass. Follow a marked name to walk the trail.

Blackwing - Sirocco the Dawn
I · Sirocco
1 / 15
  1. The first Blackwing summoned in the 5D's anime. The sirocco is a hot wind off the Sahara; its Libyan name is Ghibli, and its sibling wind is Calima.

  2. The sirocco again, by its Libyan name. Its wings copy the black and red of Black-Winged Dragon. The Japanese Duelist Pack: Crow misprinted it as Level 4, the same slip as its first Summon in episode 85.

  3. Zephyrus, the Greek god of the west wind and the gentlest of them. Its hair is Crow's.

  4. Auster, the south wind. With Abrolhos and Blizzard, one of only three Blackwings that can't be Special Summoned.

  5. Boreas, the north wind. It shares its TCG name with Boreastorm.

  6. The bora, an autumn wind of the Adriatic, which is also the Japanese name of Boreas the Sharp. The English dub of episode 52 showed it as EARTH.

  7. "Kochi" is the Japanese reading of Dongfeng, the east wind, which completes the compass.

  8. Bora and Kochi from episode 94, "Keeping a Promise, Part 1", where Crow uses them to Synchro Summon Black-Winged Dragon.

  9. The first Blackwing Tuner in the anime. Its DARK Attribute, Level 3 and 1300 ATK match Junk Synchron and Dark Resonator, the first Tuners of Yusei and Jack, as Gale was Crow's. It was also the first Blackwing to be Limited.

  10. The first Winged Beast Synchro, and Crow's signature card with Black-Winged Dragon. Its upgrade is Blackwing Full Armor Master.

  11. Named after Pinaka, the bow of Shiva, and the waxing crescent he wears. It mirrors Sharnga. The first Blackwing summoned in the 5D's manga: its art is the panel from chapter 14, with its eyes turned to the viewer.

  12. Sharanga, the bow of Vishnu, and the waning crescent: Pinaki's mirror. Its art comes from manga chapter 27.

  13. Gram, the sword Sigurd used to slay Fafnir. The first Blackwing Synchro in the manga. Its art comes from chapter 27, like those of Nothung (another name for the same sword), Damascus and Gladius.

  14. Raikiri, "Lightning Cutter": sheltering under a tree in the rain, the samurai Tachibana Dōsetsu cut the Thunder God inside a lightning bolt with his sword Chidori, and renamed it. Chidori shares its Level, ATK and DEF.

  15. Vayu, a Hindu god whose name is also an Indian word for air, in a gakuran school uniform and geta sandals. Vata has the same emblem and stats in inverted colours.

Executive Summary

The modern Blackwing archetype operates as a high-speed, resource-recursive combo deck focused on Synchro Summoning powerful DARK Winged Beast monsters. The strategy aims to establish a resilient Turn 1 endboard with layers of protection, negation, and disruption, leveraging support from the Darkwing Blast set. The deck functions like a complex system, where key starters trigger cascading searches and summons, all while navigating strict Extra Deck locks that demand precise sequencing. With a legacy forged in the shadowed skies, its success hinges on converting a one or two-card hand into overwhelming board presence.

The Search and Summon Engine

Simoon the Poison Wind

1-Card Starter

The premier single-card starter. By banishing another Blackwing from hand, Simoon places Black Whirlwind directly from the Deck and Normal Summons itself, initiating the core search mechanic and locking you into DARK monsters from the Extra Deck.

Sudri the Phantom Glimmer

Searcher & Tuner

A dual-function searcher and Synchro enabler. On Normal Summon, it searches any card that lists Black-Winged Dragon, and can Tribute a monster to summon a Level 2 Tuner Token, imposing a Synchro-only lock.

Black Feather Whirlwind

Recursion Engine

The deck's essential recovery and protection engine. This Continuous Spell revives a Blackwing from the GY or banished zone whenever a DARK Synchro is summoned, fueling the Synchro ladder and protecting your monsters from destruction.

Core Combo: The Simoon 1.5-Card Line

2

Search and Synthesize

Normal Summon Sudri to search for Black Feather Whirlwind. Then, Tribute Simoon to create a Level 2 Tuner Token. This locks you into Synchro Summons.

Climb the Synchro Ladder

Use Sudri and the Token to Synchro Summon your way up the ladder (e.g., into Nothung, then Boreastorm). Use effects like Vata to summon Black-Winged Dragon, ultimately building into your Level 10 boss monsters.

Black Whirlwind Chain into a Six-Monster Synchro Board

Beginner Guide Available

A Black Whirlwind-powered opening that chains Simoon the Poison Wind, Sudri the Phantom Glimmer, and Vata the Emblem of Wandering into a repeating Synchro engine. Nothung the Starlight and Boreastorm the Wicked Wind are Synchro Summoned and sent back to the Graveyard in sequence, using Black Feather Whirlwind and Zephyros the Elite to keep re-fueling the Whirlwind loop and pump out three separate copies of Black-Winged Assault Dragon. The line closes with Blackwing Full Armor Master, a second Black-Winged Dragon, and a second Nothung the Starlight rounding out a six-monster board, backed by Twin Shadow and Black Shadow Squall set in the Spell/Trap Zone.

Competitive Analysis

Strengths

  • High Ceiling: Can produce multi-negate, resilient boards from just a few cards.
  • Resource Recursion: Black Feather Whirlwind provides a constant loop of resources.
  • Explosive Turns: Capable of swarming the field for powerful Synchro and Link plays.

Weaknesses

  • Hand Trap Vulnerability: Extremely susceptible to Ash Blossom, Droll & Lock Bird, and Nibiru.
  • Strict Locks: Combo lines impose rigid DARK-only or Synchro-only locks that can be difficult to navigate.
  • Fragile Choke Points: The initial Normal Summon is a critical point of failure if interrupted.

Key Tech & Engines

  • Bystial Engine: Provides free extenders and graveyard disruption that synergize with the DARK lock.
  • Small World: A crucial consistency tool to bridge into Simoon.
  • Defensive Staples: Called by the Grave and Triple Tactics Talent are mandatory to protect combos.

Assault Blackwing — Kusanagi the Gathering Storm

An ARC-V anime card held back for over a decade, Kusanagi finally fills the archetype's last empty Synchro rung at Level 9. It arrives as a direct translation of its anime text, which means enormous battle numbers and no defensive clause at all.

Card Text

1 Tuner + 1+ non-Tuners
If this card is Synchro Summoned using a "Blackwing" monster as material, it is treated as a Tuner while face-up on the field. After this card is Synchro Summoned, for the rest of this turn, it gains ATK equal to the total original ATK of the Synchro Monsters used as its material. Can attack all your opponent's monsters, once each. If this card attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict piercing battle damage to your opponent.

1

Tuner conversion. Built with any Blackwing material, it counts as a Tuner on the field, so it can be climbed off rather than left as a dead end.

2

Synchro-only ATK boost. Only Synchro Monsters used as material count toward the gain, so a plain Tuner plus a Main Deck body leaves it at a bare 3000.

3

Multi-attack and piercing. It swings at every opponent monster once each and pierces Defense Position monsters, converting the boost into damage instead of removal.

The 7800 ATK Line

Base3000
+
Boreastorm2400
+
Nothung2400
=
This turn7800
  • Tune Boreastorm the Wicked Wind, a Level 6 Synchro Tuner, with Nothung the Starlight at Level 6 to hit the full number.
  • Boreastorm's level modulation is what makes the Level 9 mark reachable, adjusting to whatever body is left over.
  • A cheaper route tunes Boreastorm with a Level 3 non-Tuner such as Steam the Cloak or a revived Zephyros the Elite, but that version loses most of the boost.
  • Multi-attack plus piercing turns the number into a genuine board wipe when you are going second into a wide field.

Why Competitive Lists Skip It

  • No turn-1 value. It offers nothing on the opponent's turn, with no quick effect, no negation and no protection.
  • Slot competition. The Level 9 DARK slot already belongs to Hot Red Dragon Archfiend Abyss, made by tuning Black-Winged Dragon with Oroshi the Squall.
  • Extra Deck congestion. The best materials for the boost are cards you would rather spend on disruption, and generic builds prefer Baronne de Fleur or Accel Synchro Stardust Dragon.

Verdict. A casual and collector card. It closes games that were already winnable rather than opening new ones.

Where It Sits on the Assault Blackwing Ladder

Monster Level ATK / DEF Strategic Role
Sayo the Rain Hider 2 800 / 100 Early ladder bridge with battle protection.
Sohaya the Rain Storm 5 1500 / 2000 Revives other Assault Blackwings to extend.
Raikiri the Rain Shower 7 2600 / 2000 Targeted mass destruction, the archetype's clean-up.
Chidori the Rain Sprinkling 7 2600 / 2000 Growing beatstick that floats into another Winged Beast Synchro.
Kusanagi the Gathering StormNew 9 3000 / 1000 Going-second board wiper and OTK finisher.
Onimaru the Divine Thunder 12 3000 / 2000 Top-end boss with destruction protection.

Every Assault Blackwing Synchro shares the Tuner-conversion clause when summoned with a Blackwing material, so Kusanagi can itself be tuned away into Onimaru or another high-level body if the attack is not needed.
