Analysis of the Modern Link Engine
For decades, the "HERO" identity has been synonymous with Fusion Summoning. However, the advent of Link Summoning required an evolution. The Xtra HERO monsters are that evolution?a suite of Link monsters that form the modern framework of any competitive HERO strategy. They are not a distinct sub-archetype, but the critical connective tissue that unifies the Elemental, Destiny, Vision, and Masked HERO branches into a single, explosive combo deck.
Each of the four Xtra HERO Link Monsters serves a unique tactical purpose, acting as specialized tools to extend combos, recycle resources, or deliver a finishing blow.
The heart of the engine. Revives a Destiny HERO from the Graveyard and tributes it to search for any HERO monster, enabling massive combo extensions.
The resource recycler. When a HERO is summoned to its zone, it can Set a "Polymerization," "Fusion," or "Change" Spell from the Graveyard, creating resource loops.
A niche searcher that bridges the gap to older fusions by revealing a Fusion Monster to add its specifically named materials from the Deck to the hand.
The game finisher. A Link-3 boss monster that grants a massive, board-wide ATK boost based on the number of HEROs in the Graveyard and enables OTKs.
This walkthrough demonstrates how the deck's primary starter, Vision HERO Faris, ignites the engine.
Start by using Vision HERO Faris, discarding another HERO. This places Vision HERO Increase in your Spell/Trap Zone, which then summons itself and Vision HERO Vyon.
Use Vyon's effect to send Destiny HERO - Malicious to the GY. Then, Link Summon Xtra HERO Cross Crusader using your two Vision HEROs.
Cross Crusader revives Malicious, which is then Tributed for Cross Crusader's effect to search for any HERO. Malicious's own effect then activates in the GY, swarming the board with another body.
As of the current TCG format, the Xtra Hero archetype is entirely unrestricted, allowing it to operate at full capacity.
