An Analysis of a Fated Destiny
The Clow Cards & Magic Knights of Fate
"Past, Present, and Future—each Lady represents a different facet of fated destiny, their power growing inexorably like the passage of time itself."
Beyond their gameplay mechanics of temporal scaling, the Fortune Ladies hold a fascinating and deliberate artistic heritage. The archetype seems to borrow from the all-female Japanese manga artist collective CLAMP, in its names and in one Lady's look:
In the Japanese OCG, most Fortune Ladies are named after their Attribute with a "y" added, just like four of the element Clow Cards in Cardcaptor Sakura: Windy, Earthy, Firey and Watery. Only Past and Every take their names from time instead.
Fortune Lady Fire strongly resembles Hikaru from Magic Knight Rayearth, and her old Fortune Fairy counterpart, Fortune Fairy En, even more so.
Carly Carmine's Fortune Ladies from Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's: six of them remake the old Fortune Fairies, and their Japanese names add a "y" to their Attribute. Follow a marked name to walk the trail.
"Lighty": the Lady of Fortune Fairy Hikari. In Time Passage she strikes her pose from 5D's episode 38, where Carly explained the Ladies' rules.
"Firey", like the Clow Card in Cardcaptor Sakura; she resembles Hikaru of Magic Knight Rayearth, after Fortune Fairy En. Seen in Fortune's Future.
"Windy", another Clow Card name like Fire's; the Lady of Fortune Fairy Hu.
"Watery"; the Lady of Fortune Fairy Swee. She appears in Rewind.
"Earthy"; the Lady of Fortune Fairy Chee. She appears in Inherited Fortune.
The Lady of Fortune Fairy Ann, seen with Water in Rewind.
Earth, Light and Wind together.
Dark and Water.
Named after time, not an Attribute: Carly herself as a Dark Signer.
Also named after time, seen with Past in Calling, and the older Solitaire Magician. The only Lady whose skin tone wasn't changed for the TCG, matching the dub.
Every and Past together.
The young Every, with the Ladies' clothes, bat wings and jeweled staff, though not a Fortune Lady itself.
The Fortune Lady archetype is a Synchro-focused strategy composed of Spellcaster monsters with varying Levels and Attributes. Their core mechanics revolve around level manipulation, banishing cards as cost or as a trigger, and generating significant card advantage to summon their powerful boss monster, Fortune Lady Every. Their entire strategy is woven from the very threads of a fated destiny, requiring precise sequencing to unlock their full potential.
The archetype is split between the "Fortune Lady" monsters who form the coven, and their powerful support Spells that act as their grimoire.
The single most critical monster. When she leaves the field by a card effect, she Special Summons another Fortune Lady from the deck, starting the main combo.
The primary Tuner and combo enabler. She banishes Spellcasters to change a Fortune Lady's level, which is the most common way to trigger Light's effect.
The main payoff for the core combo. When Special Summoned while you control another Fortune Lady, she lets you draw 2 cards.
The deck's primary extender. If you control a Fortune Lady, this card Special Summons another one from the deck, but locks you into Synchro Summons for the turn.
The main consistency tool. On activation, it searches any "Fortune Lady" card from your deck to your hand and provides situational protection effects.
A powerful draw spell that synergizes with the deck's banishing mechanic. It returns a banished Fortune Lady to the GY to let you draw 2 cards.
This walkthrough shows the foundational combo using Past and Calling to generate massive advantage.
Normal Summon Fortune Lady Past. Activate Fortune Lady Calling to Special Summon Fortune Lady Light from your Deck.
Activate Past's effect, targeting herself. Banish the on-field Fortune Lady Light along with one other Spellcaster (from your hand or GY) as cost. Banishing two Spellcasters raises Past's Level by 2, making her a Level 3 Tuner. Meanwhile, Light leaving the field by card effect triggers her effect to Special Summon from the Deck.
Light's effect resolves, summoning Fortune Lady Water from the deck. Water's effect then triggers, allowing you to draw 2 cards. You now have a Level 3 Tuner (Past) and a Level 4 non-Tuner (Water) — the exact materials for a Level 7 Synchro Summon into Fortune Lady Every. From there, a recovered Fortune Lady Light or Past enables further Synchro plays into powerful generic boss monsters like Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon.
The primary archetypal goal is to summon Fortune Lady Every. However, because her most powerful effects are delayed (triggering on your Standby Phase or the opponent's End Phase), she is not an ideal turn-one interactive piece. The true strength of the deck's end board lies in its flexibility.
As of the current TCG format, the Fortune Lady archetype is entirely unrestricted, allowing it to operate at full capacity.
