"The Vendread covenant is written in the ink of the dead — a ritual compact between the living and those who were denied a proper rest. They are not raised; they are reconstructed, each component monster sacrificed to build something greater, a revenant of escalating horror. The price of their power is paid in layers of flesh, and the final product is an abomination that carries within it the accumulated hatred of everything it consumed."

Vendread Revenants
I · Endless night
  1. The city once never slept. Then a darkness shrouded the sky, morning never came again, and with it came the Vendreads: corpses that crawled from their graves in grotesque new bodies, with no memories or will, attacking anything alive.
  2. No modern weapon could stop them, and anyone they killed became one of them. As the undead multiplied, the living retreated behind a hastily built wall.
  3. Among the horde wandered a young man who had also died. One day he came upon a woman the Vendreads had carried off, and the locket at her neck stirred something in him: she had been the love of his life.
  4. Grief boiled into hatred, and the pain rebuilt his body. He hung her locket around his neck: "I swear, I will vanquish every last one of these walking corpses!" The Vendread who hunts Vendreads was born: Revendread Slayer.
  5. At the wall, a shadow cut down the horde and vanished without looking back. He wanted revenge, not heroism, but to the survivors he was their one ray of hope.
  6. Hunted by their executor, the Vendreads began to merge into something bigger, which people named after the beast of legend: the Vendread Chimera.
  7. Each fight barely ended in a draw, until the Slayer found the core that governed the Chimera and threw all his strength into destroying it. The Chimera crumbled. But its defeat would only bring worse…
  8. One day the wall was broken and countless people slain. The horde had a new leader, huge and heavily armored, born from the grudges of every Vendread the Slayer had destroyed: the Vendread Battlelord.
  9. It absorbed the Vendreads around it and the newly dead, growing ever stronger. The Slayer tried everything, and was overwhelmed.
  10. As the Battlelord reached into the Slayer's chest to absorb his power, the glint of the locket reminded him his mission wasn't over…
  11. …and he plunged his hand into the Battlelord's chest, ripped out its core, and began absorbing its hateful power.
  12. But the core brushed his locket, and the Vendreads around him took on the form of the woman he had loved. He froze. No: this was a nightmare, disgracing her memory!
  13. His rage exploded, and he became the Revendread Executor. He cut down the false figures one after another, fighting past every limit of mind and body, until at last the horde moved no more.
  14. The sun broke through the dark sky for the first time in countless nights. The Slayer felt himself fading with the light: he, too, was a Vendread, and now it was his time to go.
  15. But the survivors' kind hearts pulled him back. From atop the glowing skyscrapers, a shadow still watches over them: if darkness ever falls again, he will fight, not for vengeance, but for peace.
Who's who

Executive Summary

The Vendread archetype is a DARK Zombie Ritual strategy defined by a unique and powerful mechanic: its Ritual Monsters gain bonus effects based on the monsters tributed from the field for their summon. This creates a highly tactical, modular playstyle focused on building a single, formidable boss monster with multiple forms of interruption. While plagued by some internal mechanical conflicts, the deck's access to the vast pool of generic Zombie support allows it to function as a resilient, resource-looping engine capable of overwhelming opponents through sheer advantage and powerful, customized threats.

Anatomy of the Horde

The Ritual Bosses

Revendread Slayer

The core engine piece. When sent from field to GY, it searches a Ritual Spell and sends any Vendread monster from Deck to GY, starting a powerful resource loop.

Vendread Battlelord

Provides crucial protection by allowing you to declare a card type (Monster, Spell, or Trap) and preventing your opponent from activating it for the turn.

Revendread Executor

The ultimate boss monster. Prevents your opponent from targeting any other cards you control, forcing them to deal with its 3000 ATK first.

The Ritual Fodder

Vendread Revenants

Grants the most powerful inherited effect: a Quick Effect to banish any Special Summoned monster the opponent controls.

Vendread Houndhorde

Bestows a Quick Effect to banish a Spell/Trap the opponent controls, providing crucial backrow removal.

Vendread Core

Provides targeting protection, making the Ritual Monster immune to many forms of removal and enabling the "Executor Lock".

Blueprint for the Apocalypse

The deck's power comes from turning a single Ritual Summon into a cascade of advantage. This core sequence demonstrates how the undead legion fuels itself.

Revendread Slayer
Missing: 4388680
1

Summon & Sacrifice

Ritual Summon Revendread Slayer. Immediately use it as material for a Link Summon (e.g., Avendread Savior).

Revendread Evolution
2

Trigger the Engine

When Slayer hits the GY, its effect triggers. Add a Ritual Spell like Revendread Evolution to hand and send a "Vendread" monster like Scar of the Vendread to the GY.

Vendread Charge
3

Cascade Advantage

The "Scar" sent to the GY now triggers, letting you search for any "Vendread" Spell/Trap, such as Vendread Charge, for further extension. One summon has now generated two searches and a loaded GY.

The Final Stand: End Boards

The Executor Lock

Revendread Executor
  • Untargetable Fortress: Summoned using Vendread Core, Executor becomes untargetable.
  • Board Protection: Executor's own effect prevents your other cards from being targeted.
  • Inherited Power: Can also gain banishing effects from Revenants and Houndhorde.

Zombie World Control

Doomking Balerdroch
  • Floodgate & Recur: Combine with Zombie World to disrupt opponent's plays.
  • Recurring Negation: Balerdroch revives itself and provides a monster negate every turn.
  • Banishing Power: Offers a Quick Effect to banish monsters from the field or GY.

Strategic Assessment

Strengths

  • Powerful Recursion: Exceptional grind game thanks to Zombie typing and in-archetype revival.
  • High Ceiling: Capable of producing incredibly resilient and disruptive boards.
  • Flexible Ritual Spells: Trio of Ritual Spells offers unmatched versatility for different situations.

Weaknesses

  • Inconsistency: Prone to awkward hands without a mix of monsters and spells.
  • GY Dependent: Extremely vulnerable to cards that banish from the GY or prevent GY effects.
  • Clear Choke Points: A single hand trap on a key starter like Uni-Zombie can end the turn.

Key Synergies

  • Uni-Zombie Package: The heart of Zombie combo decks, providing GY setup and Synchro plays.
  • Shiranui Engine: Turns the cost of Revendread Origin into a benefit, triggering effects when banished.
  • Generic Link/Synchro Monsters: Can easily pivot to make powerful bosses like Baronne de Fleur and Chaos Angel.
