"The X-Sabers were the vanguard of competitive play in an era that defined what Yu-Gi-Oh! could be at its most aggressive. These beast-warriors, equipped with the distinctive X-shaped blade emblem, fought as a cohesive pack — each monster designed to support the others, their hand-stripping loop representing the pinnacle of interactive gameplay. Darksoul, Fulhelmknight, Pashuul: names that still resonate with players who remember when the Saber pressure was the defining question of the metagame."

Worm Apocalypse
I · The Worms
  1. For ages the continent's tribes had fought one another for land and power. Then the Worms crashed down on meteorites: invaders from outer space that mutate to fit any world, multiply, and consume it.
  2. Each tribe fought back in its own way. The Ice Barrier freed Brionac, one of its sealed ice dragons, while the X-Sabers, Mist Valley and Flamvell sent their strongest. Every attack only pushed the Worms to evolve.
  3. As whole tribes died out, the four strongest, the Flamvell, the Ice Barrier, the X-Sabers and Mist Valley, joined forces as the Ally of Justice to build anti-Worm weapons. Catastor, made by all four together, won ground on every front.
  4. The Allies also found the Genex, silent machines that seemed to improve the land around them. Seeing the Worms as polluters, the Genex set about wiping them out, and the Allies began studying what they were.
  5. The surviving Worms kept evolving, until clever Worm Nobles took command of the rest. Worn down, the X-Sabers' leader Gottoms chose a new generation, the XX-Sabers, fitted with the Allies' machinery.
  6. The Worms reached even the forest of the peaceful Naturia. They hated fighting, but not one of them stepped back from the invaders fouling their home.
  7. From the Worms' meteorites the Allies built the Ally Mind, began capturing Worms, and made captured Genex run their weapons. Mist Valley disliked using the voiceless Genex, and the Fabled secretly fed that doubt until they left the alliance.
  8. Woken by the chaos on the surface, or perhaps by the Allies' experiments with other dimensions, the Fabled rose from deep below: evil gods true only to their own desires, who joined fights only when it amused them.
  9. The Fabled fell on the nest of the Jurrac, where Worms rarely came. The proud Jurrac refused to be prey and burned the hunters with the flames that clothed their bodies. Meanwhile the Allies fitted some Genex with fusion reactors, making the R-Genex.
  10. With Worms marching day and night and the Fabled striking where they pleased, the Ice Barrier freed its second dragon, Gungnir. Its breath turned invaders and gods alike into ice.
  11. Alone since leaving the Allies, Mist Valley was close to defeat when its strongest weapon, the Mist Wurm, fell. Then the legendary Dragunity rode in from Dragon Ravine: knights who become one with their dragons in body and soul.
  12. As Worm attacks grew strangely rare, the Allies built their ultimate weapon. Then space tore open and Worm Zero emerged, devouring its own kind. The floating fortress Decisive Armor met it, both struck at once, and the Worms were wiped out.
  13. In the brief peace, the Fabled moved to conquer the surface, led by the beasts called The Fabled. Mist Valley agreed to help the Allies again, and together they built the Genex Allies from repaired Genex and R-Genex reactors, one model for each tribe.
  14. Their flames halved, the last Jurrac became one blazing meteor and fell on their own nest, burning the Fabled there to ash. From the ashes rose the Neo Flamvell, and their wishes woke the Ancient Flamvell Deity, which burned away the Fabled left in the nest.
  15. The other Fabled only fought harder, and the exhausted land was laid waste. Divided, the Ice Barrier broke the seal of its third dragon. Trishula destroyed every Fabled on the planet, but it would not obey, and all three dragons rampaged together.
  16. Not even the Tiger King Dewloren could stop them. The Sacred Spirit, which had watched over the Ice Barrier since its founding, gave up its own being to seal all three dragons at once.

Side story: the first X-Sabers

The Valuable Book EX 6 (2026) looks back at the founder of the X-Sabers and its first members. Apart from Gottoms, no one knows where they are now.

Commander Souza, Swordmaster gathered notorious mercenaries from every land and, eccentric as they were, made them the X-Sabers. At times he resolved to sacrifice comrades for the greater good, and afterwards was seen grieving them in anguish. But at some point, disposing of allies without hesitation became routine for him, a change those who knew him in the early years could hardly believe. What could have happened to him?

X-Saber Gottoms, born in Souza's homeland, learned the sword in a friendly rivalry with him and became his second-in-command. After Souza disappeared, many members wanted him as the new commander.

X-Saber Pellina toyed with her opponents and struck from their blind spot. One day she reported a tip about a nation secretly researching a door to another world, went in alone, and was never seen again.

X-Saber Bruno could wield ten blades with his superpower. An enigma even among the others, he rose to staff officer on his swordsmanship and strategy, and was often seen talking privately with Souza late at night.

Archetype Overview: The Mercenary Creed

The X-Saber archetype represents a powerful and aggressive Synchro-based strategy from the 5D's era. Comprised of EARTH Warrior and Beast-Warrior monsters, they are depicted as a formidable mercenary tribe. Their core strategy is defined by a relentless swarm of special summons to assemble powerful Synchro Monsters for board control, backed by one of the game's most notorious hand-control loops revolving around their boss monster, XX-Saber Gottoms.

The Classic Arsenal

Core Monsters

XX-Saber Boggart Knight
Missing: 5998840

XX-Saber Boggart Knight

The premier combo starter. A single Normal Summon establishes two monsters, meeting the condition for Faultroll.

XX-Saber Faultroll
Missing: 51808422

XX-Saber Faultroll

The heart of the engine. Special Summons itself and revives an X-Saber from the GY. Its non-once-per-turn effect enables explosive combos and loops.

XX-Saber Darksoul
Missing: 31383545

XX-Saber Darksoul

The primary searcher. When sent from the field to the GY, it searches any "X-Saber" monster during the End Phase.

XX-Saber Fulhelmknight
Missing: 78422252

XX-Saber Fulhelmknight

A versatile Level 3 Tuner that can negate an attack and revive an X-Saber from the GY after destroying a monster.

From here, use Faultroll's effect to revive a Tuner or another monster to perform Synchro Summons, leading into your primary win conditions.

Optimal Endboards

Hand Annihilation

XX-Saber Gottoms
  • XX-Saber Gottoms: The centerpiece of the hand loop. By repeatedly Tributing and reviving X-Sabers with multiple Faultrolls, you can discard your opponent's entire hand.
  • Non-Interactive Win: This strategy effectively ends the game by leaving your opponent with no resources to play on their turn.

Board Control & Disruption

XX-Saber Hyunlei
  • XX-Saber Hyunlei: Destroys up to 3 Spells/Traps upon summon, clearing the way for a decisive attack.
  • Naturia Beast/Barkion: Using external support like Rescue Cat, the deck can summon these powerful floodgates.
